Picking up Poop in Seattle

I've long believed that this whole issue really boils down to scooping poop. Everyone has at least one vivid memory of stepping in some, and it's a not-too-pleasant memory, either. And it's very tempting to spot it on the ground and want to attribute it to the first dog you see. It wasn't until I read an story in the Austin American-Statesman that I discovered that Seattle requires owners to carry visible poop-scooping bags. I think it's a fine idea.

In Seattle, for example, dog owners in city parks must visibly carry scooping equipment and can be ticketed $50 for not having it. And people do get ticketed, said Dewey Potter, communications manager for the Seattle Parks and Recreation Department.

I don't like the idea of a visible bag law. I hate it when people leave poo as much as anyone, but I dislike the idea of more park supervision, and think the law would be ineffective. I do appreciate the poo-bag dispensers available in many parks though because I have underestimated my dog's fecal fecundity before.

If you think that this whole mess boils down to dog poo, you are more naive than I thought. There are many more issues, such as fear or dogs, just not liking dogs, etc. If you focus on that one minor area, you will overlook more comprehensive solutions. Please don't mislead the consumers of your website. Thanks.

I have tons, but the main thing is for dog owners to unite and actively stand up for our rights, educate the public and make our presence known. If we join together, instead of keeping to ourselves and hoping it will all pass, we have to be acknowledged. The few consistent voices that we hear are not enough- obviously. When we are recognized as a legitimate group, we can then tackle each of the issues that the rest of the public has about off leash issues. This has been the hardest thing, though. Getting people involved in this issue that they claim to care about has been like pulling teeth!

...and besides, if you look at all the postings on this blog, it's clear that we don't "focus on that one minor area", but on a whole range of issues. This one post is not the entirety of this website. Besides, dog poop is not just a minor issue. It's one of the primary issues for a large number of people, such as the sports teams.
