"I've gained 10 pounds in the last 3 months."
That's a comment I overheard at a park last night. The lady who made the quote was referring to the fact that because she can no longer use any of the 3 parks within walking distance of her house, she has had to drive to a park twice a day. Like many dog owners, she actually uses parks for exercise, and that includes the process of getting there and back. Isn't that a primary use of parks...exercise? This has got to be the first time in years that the City has developed a program that actually encourages Portlanders to drive more. Mayor Katz, why would you encourage driving when you pride yourself on getting around by foot in this "walkable city"?

That's some pretty faulty logic.
Perhaps she could walk her dog on a leash around the block a few times. Then drive to the park. Or walk by herself. Then drive to the park. The fat's there because she's not making time for exercise. It's not Vera Katz's fault; it's the dog-owner's.
Perhaps she was exaggerating...that's a lot of weight to gain in 3 months, I grant you. But I clearly see her point. I take my two dogs to the park twice a day. Normandale park (the closest full-time park) is a 12 minute drive from my neighborhood. 48 min/day = 5.6 hours/week. With limited hours in a person's life, the 5.6 hours a week spent walking 3 months ago necessarily gets converted to 5.6 hours a week driving. Moreover, we're at the park longer. Whereas we would normally be there for 5 minutes or so, we now stay for 15-20 minutes to get the equivalent exercise.
But this lady is lucky, she at least drives. Mayor Katz, like many in this city, doesn't even have a car.
